Taking regular time to look back over my days helps me to know myself better, celebrate the progress that I’m making, and notice what I need most right now.
We can reflect at any time, but as Gretchen Rubin rightly says, ‘what can be done any any time is often done at no time’. Pairing reflection with the change of seasons or quarters is one way to fix a regular time for it.
As we move from March into April, from winter to spring, I’ve compiled my favourite reflection questions in a handy download for you.
Below, I share three things I’m taking away from my own quarterly review this season.
3 take aways from my own reflections
Micro-rest makes a real difference. I had a few weeks this quarter that were exceptionally busy. I knew this wasn’t sustainable, and also recognised that I had to find a way to make it work for a couple more weeks. I got super focused on micro-moments of rest: ten minutes to walk around the block when I could feel the tension growing in my shoulders; five minutes sat in the sun to drink my coffee and quiet my mind; a two minute stretch between Zoom calls; one minute of breathing slowly; and always always getting to bed on time. After a few days I felt better. It still wasn’t a sustainable pace, long term, but I knew that now I would get through the next two weeks and still feel like myself.
The more you create, the more you create: I started a couple of new creative habits this quarter, and noticed that the more I wrote, and the more I drew, the more I wrote and drew! Making time for these hobbies, reminded me how much I enjoy them, which inspired me to find a little more time. And the more I created, the more I had new ideas, which called me back to my writing and art table.
The more you moan, the more you moan! The more dynamic works for bad habits as well as good. I don’t think I need to say more about this!
